Among the myriad of attractions are the world famous Eiffel tower, the monumental masterpiece Notre-Dame-de-Paris and a long list which follows. Among all the exclusively attractive architectural gems of Paris, the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile is one place worth mentioning. Owing to its breathtaking architecture, this place is known to be the largest triumphal arch.

The famous Parisian monument is situated right at the top of Chaillot hill. There are a dozen avenues that start at this point and go outwards, forming a star. The Arc de Triomphe offers an impressive panoramic view of the city. From here one can see a smaller arch and the Luxor obelisk.

The Arch was built by Napoleon I in glory of his armies, in the 19th century. The building is vast in expanse and simplicity is its specialty. It rises from the ground at a height of 49.5m like a mirage. The minutely sculpted walls of the arch showcase the ancient French Gothic art. A symbol of historic associations, the arch has become an emblem of French patriotism.

The physical description of the arch takes us to the time of French victory over numerous provinces. At the foundation of its four massive pillars, reminiscing the victory of 1810 (by Cortot); Resistance, and Peace (both by Etex); and The Departure of the Volunteers, more commonly known as La Marseillaise (by Francois Rude).

No visitor can stay indifferent in front of such a majestic monument. Important victories were immortalized at the top of the arch with engravings of such victories from the times of Napoleon and the Revolution.

If Paris is a dream city for those with an eye for history and romance, the arch here is a must-visit for all. Looking through some Arc de Triomphe Photos, the ineffable charm of Paris remains unsung. You will be lost in the world of art and architecture as every small piece of architecture is captivating. Whether you are a fan of the Da Vinci phenomenon or not, the monuments themselves will guide you through the places in the book and let you engross in the book's mood. - 29948

Tips For Travelers

By Graham McKenzie

Traveling isn't always relaxing. Spending time in airports isn't the way most people would choose to spend an afternoon. Whether you're headed to your parents for the holidays or going on a last minute business trip, traveling is frustrating at the best of times. Packing can be stressful to. When you're waiting at the gate, you might be wondering what will be available at your destination and what you should leave behind. Last minute packing is the worst; running around at the last minute to make sure you have everything you need. Do you have your toothbrush and contacts? Batteries for your camera and chewing gum? You make to check everything in your carry-on to make sure that you're not carrying any restricted items. With a little preplanning, travel stress can be eased. Read on to find some helpful travel tips!

Packing is an especially important part of your trip. You don't want to forget something essential. When you're going through security, you need to follow procedures that may leave you digging through your purse or carry-on when you're in a rush to catch a flight. The first tip about flight security is paying attention to the rules about carrying liquids through security. This not only includes beverages, but toothpaste, liquid deodorant, lotion, lip gloss, aerosols, and much more. Many people are used to packing these items in their carry-on bags without thinking about the restrictions. Restricted items that might be confiscated by the security officers may not be returned!

To avoid losing the new lotion that you got for Christmas, pack larger bottles of liquids in checked bags. Security does allow a one quart, clear, zipper-top bag with liquids in amounts smaller than three ounces (but no aerosols) to be carried with you on the plane. Remember, pack small, travel size liquids in a clear Zip-Loc bag and pack all other liquids in your checked luggage. Think carefully about your shoes. You'll be required to take them off at the security checkpoint. Don't wear shoes that are difficult to remove because this will slow down the security process. Wear easy to remove sneakers or flip-flops. If you need to, you can carry the shoes you want to change into in your carry-on bag. Being well prepared will help you avoid other passengers getting impatient with you.

Depending on the time of year that you're traveling, you might want to arrive at the airport well ahead of your flight. During peak travel dates, arrive at least two hours before your flight departure. An airline beginning boarding airplanes 30-40 minutes before the plane is scheduled for take-off. This leaves you with only 1 hour to get everything done!

Depending on how you made your flight reservation, you may print your ticket at the check-in kiosk. These kiosks are self-serve, so you don most of the work yourself. This is convenient, but you need to know how to use them or else check-in can eat-up your time at the airport. Keep some things close at hand: your ticket record locator (a 13-digit number), confirmation number and driver's license. After checking in and printing your ticket, you can check your bags at the counter and show your ID to the ticket agent. Now you're free of your huge suitcase and you can head for the security checkpoint!

The security checkpoint is not as bad as you think: it moves fast and as long as you know what to do it runs smoothly. When you arrive you will need to present the security person with your ID and your boarding past. You must then remove your shoes and place these, any electronic devices larger than your hand and your zip-lock bags containing liquids, in containers and then place your carry-on items on the conveyor belt that takes your items through an x-ray machine. Meanwhile you pass through a metal detector. Once you've successfully passed through the security checkpoint and collected your items all that's left is to board the plane.

It's a good idea to read travel tips from a variety of sources when vacationing to ensure tat when the time comes to travel that you don't panic about what you may or may not have forgotten. Your traveling will be a lot smoother the more well prepared you are. - 29948

The Ancient History of Barry, South Wales: Part Two

By Owen Jones

In the Eighteenth Century, they found dishes, saws, knives, flints, a scraper, a prehistoric horn celt with strange markings, a spokeshave and some arrowheads from the Neolithic Period. These artifacts are safely ensconced in the Museum of Wales in Cardiff, but unfortunately, no one at the time thought the find significant enough to warrant a dig and now there are houses on it.

An ancient Roman kitchen replete with cooking utensils and food remains was also abandoned without investigation. In 1533, Leland, the King's Antiquary, was ordered to visit 'all places where records are held'. It took him nine years and he wrote of Barry Island:

"It is about a mile in circumference and has good corn, grass and some wood, and there is no dwelling on the Island, but in the midst of it is a fair little Chapel of St. Baruch which is visited by many pilgrims. It took the name Barri from this holy man who was buried there and whose remains are yet on the Island". (The Welsh name for Barry is Y Barri).

Viking raiders attacked the south Wales coastline, often taking hostages from monasteries in the 10th. Century, but they did not try to settle in the area. The island was long known as the Saints Retreat or the Island of Saints. Later, in the early 16th. Century, the island was used by smugglers and pirates and was nicknamed the Smugglers Fortress. This coincided with the increase in shipping to and from Bristol, Britain's second biggest port at the time.

Barry Island soon became the centre of piracy and smuggling in the Bristol Channel. In 1784, the island became known as the "Fortress of Knight". Knight was the most prolific pirate and smuggler in the channel and people were to terrified to speak out in court against him., although he was also considered a bit of a local hero. His armed ship was called 'John O' Combe'. He was eventually forced out to Lundy, which he also fortified. He and his successor, Arthur, returned to Barry so frequently that H.M. Customs asked the government to station a cutter in Penarth and 60 troops to Barry.

Rhoose was infamous for its wreckers and George II sent troops to break up the smugglers and wreckers. They landed at Aberthaw "the Rhoose men's favourite landing zone, from where they could easily transport the contraband along Port Road to Cardiff, the main market for such things". Several large caves were filled in while constructing the present day docks and it is likely that they were used by the pirates until they were moved on in about 1850. - 29948

European Cruise Vacation Guide

By Jason Myers

If you're considering a European cruise holiday but have previously sailed the Mediterranean and the Baltic, one more choice lies ahead for you: a river cruise.

A river cruise provides a comforting, picturesque way to see Prague, Vienna, Cologne, Budapest and other centers of European history, art and culture. Between the cities, you'll discover charming villages and peaceful countryside.

River cruise ships are different from their ocean-going counterparts. On these tinier, lower-profile boats, you're not likely to find amenities such as swimming pools or casinos. However, you will find comfortable cabins and public areas, which often provide wide windows and wide-open decks for viewing the ever-changing scenery. The ship?s flat bottoms offer a smooth travel, minimizing any apprehensions about motion sickness.

The smaller size of river cruise boats also signifies they can go places that their bigger, ocean-going cousins cannot. River cruise ships can literally cruise into the heart of every destination, harboring near city centers. There will be a little new to do and view on shore every day, and a lot of shore excursions are included in the basic price of a river cruise.

The most famous river cruises in Europe can be those that float down the Rhine or the Danube, but cruise boats also tour on the Main, the Seine and a lot more. For example, in the Low Countries of The Netherlands and Belgium, cruise boats sail the Nieuw Maas, Waal and Schelde Rivers to call on Amsterdam, Antwerp and Rotterdam. Spring is a wonderful time to cruise there, as the windmill-dotted scenery comes alive with colorful tulips.

A lot of river cruise guests take pleasure in consuming a few more days in the cities - such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris or Lucerne - where their cruises begin or finish, spending days to know more about a city that can't be accessed by an ocean cruise. - 29948

Barry, South Wales: Ancient History: Part 1

By Owen Jones

Most of what we know or have guessed about Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan in south Wales has come from observing the buildings situated there, the majority of which have been sadly neglected for far too long. There are historical tales, such as the one about Joseph of Arimathea, who traded tin in Glastonbury, just across the water and was one of the first missionaries to go to this area.

Tradition maintains that the father of Caractacus took his son to Rome and was converted to Christianity. They returned to the Vale of Glamorgan with the missionary Bran the Blessed. We do know that Christianity had become fairly popular by the early 4th. Century and that south Wales sent some bishops to the Council of Rome.

Saint Baruch's Church on Barry Island is one of the oldest places of historic religious interest in the region, but unfortunately, it too has been allowed to become dilapidated. Barry Island was one of the most important places of monastic interest in south Wales and around. The ancient Viking strongholds of Steep and Flat Holms also housed monks and Saint Illtyd's Seminary in nearby Llantwit Major, which taught 2,200 disciples, was closely linked to it too.

A castle was constructed on the site of an old Roman fort and naval shipyard, which had been on Porthkerry Point, although it protruded further out to sea then than it does now. Furthermore, many wolf and deer bones have been found between Barry and Sully, proving these animals' existence there in vast numbers Arrowheads, flints, needles and coins show that people inhabited the area with them.

Barry Island was first known as Baruchs Island after St. Baruch, who was found drowned, washed up on the beach in 700 AD. He had drowned on his return from Flat Holm, where it was customary for Saints and religious students of the seminaries to spend Lent.

He and Gwelches were both students of St. Cadoc and when they had got back from Flat Holm, they realized that they had left their enchiridion (religious manual) behind. St. Cadoc made them go back for it. Neither monk returned from the trip alive.St. Illtyd, St. Baruch's most famous disciple was educated there too.

Barry Island has had its name changed several times over the centuries. It was once called 'Island of the Saints' and 'Insular of Peiros', after St. Peiro, who was St. Illtyd's successor at the seminary at Llantwit Major. He was also St. Samson's luminary. There was also a St. Doeninas, who was abbot of a nearby abbey on Friars' Point. - 29948

Campervan Hire For The First Time

By Steve MacDonald

It was the summer and I was living in The French Alps, Serre Chevalier in the Hautes Alpes to be exact. My oldest girl was 5 years old and my newest baby girl, nearly 8 weeks only. I had lived in the French Alps for about seven years and both my parents and my parents-in-law were all still very much alive and reasonably well, but not great travellers now that they had reached their mid 70s. As they all live in the UK, the only way to do it was to visit the UK so that they could meet my new daughter.

Of course their were other considerations too such as an old friend of mine was having a 50th birthday party, and there were my two brother-in-laws that my wife and I hadn't seen for over 2 years.

I was going to drive to England for sure, but then where would we stay? This was the middle of August, which is high season holiday season in the UK - places to stay would be either booked up or just simply too expensive. So I thought about camping with a tent or maybe two tents, but only for a a short while, before my wife pointed out that this was to be very very impractical with a newborn baby. I had to think of something else, and this is where the idea of motorhome hire came in...

I decided to hire a motorhome from Motorholme in the UK. The company had well over 400 motorhomes dotted around the UK and surprisingly enough still had some available for August even though I was making my enquiry at the end of July. I chose to hire a motorhome in Arborfield, a small village in Berkshire which was a fairly central location for our travels. I called a UK Freephone number, 0800 612 8719 to make the enquiry and I spoke to the very pleasent Sheena who helped me with my booking. I was surprised how easy it all was, a credit card number confirmed the booking and then there was a minimal amount of paperwork just to provide the 'legalities' for the insurance for the motorhome.

On arrival in the UK I decided to drop my family off at my brother-in-laws in London, I then went off to the motorhome hire pickup point in Reading where I met Anne who showed me around the motorhome, a 2004 Eldiss Autoquest 200. She showed me all the features that I would be using such as hot and cold running water, gas central heating (yes it can get cold in the UK, even in summer!). My only concern at this point was how I would fit my child car seats into the motorhome for when they are travelling along. Lap belts were provided in the rear but they weren't facing forwards, which meant I couldn't point my kids in the right direction. I decided to 'work something out later' as it was getting dark now. I left my car at the pick up point as agreed.

The drive back to Barnet was fine, I've driven some quite large vans in my time, so the size wasn't a problem and indeed the two litre diesel seemed to take it along the M4 at 70mph with no problem. When I got back home I realised there was a way I could thread the rear seat belts differently to at least give my baby the correct orientation.

The next day we packed up the motorhome with all our things and set off for Paignton in Devon, where my 'little' brother-in-law lives. This was an easy stop as we just parked in his driveway and ran everything off the auxilliary battery and gas. We stayed in Devon a few days, which included 3 nights at Beverly Park - a campsite with a kids club, crazy golf, plus indoor and outdoor pools. We had a day at Paignton Zoo and a day on the beach at Torquay, so all was good.

The next stop was my parents up in Stoke-on-Trent, not the most amazing of places, but 5 year old Maddy loved seeing her Grandparents. The motorhome just about fitted in the driveway of their bungalow and we had to level it using the ramps provided. Our trip was sadly coming to an end now, but we still managed to squeeze in my 'in-laws' in Leighton Buzzard, an annual reunion from my wife's 'art school days' in Muswell Hill, London and even the 50th birthday in Watford and a trip to see some old friends of ours from France who now live Near Braintree, Essex.

Overall I was pleased with the Eldiss Autoquest 200 motor home and the motorhome hire experience, but next time I would probably look for one with a permanent double bed at the rear and some single beds nearer the front that would double as seating for the passengers. I will probably buy a motorhome one day, but I really do think I will hire a few first to get a feel of what is on offer by different manufacturers and which is perfect for my family. - 29948

Credit Crunch Holidays by Motorhome Hire

By Susan Lomas

Because of the poor GBP/EURO exchange rate, British residents will get much less for their money in Europe unless the present situation improves. At the time of writing, the situation isn't much better than it was this time last year.

As a result of this many UK residents will be not considering going abroad for their 2010 holiday unless the situation improves.

This is why the smart money is on a motorhome holiday for 2010. If the exchange rate does not improve before the summer then a motorhome holiday in the United Kingdom makes good financial sense.

If the sterling/euro exchange rate should improve in the pound sterling's favour then you could still take your already hired motorhome to Europe and make the most of getting more euros for your money. Countries such as Spain and also the former Eastern block countries such as Croatia have great cheap campsites and meals out are inexpensive.

Better fuel prices: It is worth noting that political and economic circumstances surrounding America and the Middle East have meant that fuel prices have stabilized during the autumn of 2009. Petrol and diesel are less expensive than they were a few months ago, a situation which looks likely to last into 2010 and a factor that is very important if you are considering a touring holiday.

Investing in the United Kingdom: If you do "holiday at home" in the United Kingdom you will be helping to keep small businesses in your own country afloat. You may be helping other people just like you to provide for their families. You will be making a "greener choice" too by not flying to your holiday destination.

When you hire your motorhome in the United Kingdom and you pay in pounds sterling, you are not affected by fluctuations in the European exchange rate.

Families love motorhome holidays: Children love camping holidays but sometimes Mums and Dads find the "under canvas" variety somewhat lacking in luxury! - 29948
