Backpacks, Travel And You

By Graham McKenzie

A backpack is always helpful while traveling by airplane. But there are several limitations as well. The rules may include about the number of bags each person is allowed to carry with him or considering the size of the bag, and the maximum weight that can be allowed to carry in these bags. There are plenty of backpack carry rules to be considered while traveling with a backpack on a airplane. The limitations are almost endless so as to what kind of back can be brought into the plane.

Backpacks come in many sizes and you'll likely want one that can easily handle all your travel items. However, space is limited on airplanes and it's not unusual for you to find that the overhead storage areas are too small for your backpack, especially on smaller commuter planes. It can be a unwelcome surprise to board a plane and find that, no mater how much you push and shove, your backpack will not fit into the overhead storage bin.

It's important to know that you have a backpack that will allow you to be flexible if the need arises. Other passengers that have larger luggage may not be comfortable checking the bag and trusting it to arrive at their destination. Storing the bag underneath your seat may also not be an option as there may not be enough space.

If you are traveling with a larger backpack you should know that in some cases, your bag may not be able to fit. This may be especially true with backpacks that are used for longer trips or for longer than a one night stay. If you have a larger backpack that will not fit, it will most likely have to be kept in the luggage section of the aircraft if other space arrangements can not be made by the airline.

The under seat area of a plane is very small, sometimes as little as 5 inches high which tends to exclude larger backpacks. All under seat items must be fully stored and not sticking out into the isle as this is a safety hazard. If your back doesn't fit, it's very likely the attendant will require it to be stored in the baggage area of the plane with the other standard luggage. This can delay the flight, annoy the other passengers and may even result in you missing your flight if the captain feels it would result in an unacceptable delay to the flight schedule.

There are also certain other things to be taken care of. The weight of the baggage must be taken into consideration. The materials and things that are packed inside the backpack are also important. There is an average weight that is allowed for carry-on baggage. It is forty pounds. But the international airlines have some differences considering this weight allowance. For example Air France allows only twenty six pounds to be carried on a backpack. So we have to be careful arranging their backpack, so as to not get rejected.

Carry on rules for airplanes are essential to know and will save you valuable time. Many airlines may not be able to allow carry on of certain sizes. It is important to remember to make sure that each individual only has one bag, and that the size, dimensions, and weight will be allowed. Additional information such as questions, comments, or concerns, as well as your airline's individual policies can be obtained by contacting the airline or airline group you will be flying with. - 29948
